Lady Braves win two of three tourney games

Orestimba’s Lady Braves turned in a solid showing in the recent Hilmar tourney, winning two of three games.

The Lady Braves opened tournament play with a dominant 48-12 victory over Mariposa.

Orestimba set the tone early, holding the Grizzlies to a single basket in the opening quarter and taking a 27-6 halftime lead. The Lady Braves blanked Mariposa in the third quarter en route to the win.

Susanna Rempel and Audrey Corella were in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Julia Patereau collected six, Jessica Marin finished with five points, Brianna Martens scored three and Raven Ramirez and Denise Leon each chipped in with two points.

Host Hilmar handed Orestimba a 48-40 setback in second-round play.

The Lady Braves rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to take the lead in the third, but Hilmar answered back and went on to the win.

Patereau led Orestimba with 14 points. Martens and Monica Perez each scored eight, Claire Barron and Corella had four points each and Marin rounded out the scoring with two.

Orestimba bounced back to defeat Summerville 36-23 behind a strong defensive effort in third-round tournament play.

The Bears were held to just nine points in the first half. Summerville pulled to within five in the third quarter, but Orestimba turned back the rally to emerge with the victory.

Perez and Barron provided a solid one-two scoring punch for the Lady Braves. Perez finished with 15 points, while Barron put up 13. Patereau chipped in with six points, and Corella added two.

“We played a pretty good tournament overall,” Coach Josh Hamm commented. “I’m really happy with the way the girls were able to adjust to challenges that the other teams threw our way. The Hilmar game came down to making layups. We missed a couple of key ones that would have made the game that much closer, but overall we did extremely well.”
