JV Lady Redskins on a roll

Taylor Azevedo goes up with the shot for Gustine’s JV Lady Redskins in their win over Waterford.

The Gustine junior varsity Lady Redskins extended their Southern League win streak to four games with victories over Waterford and Delhi last week.

Gustine battled back and forth with the Wildcats in the first half of Thursday’s home game against Waterford but came away with the 35-21 victory.

The Lady Redskins took control of the game in the third after being down a single point at halftime. A stifling defense allowed the Lady Redskins to extend their lead to as many as 15 points in the final period of play.

Almadelia Cruz led Gustine with seven points. Marisela Luis had six points, while Cynthia Murillo, Lupe Luna and Yvette Terriquez each netted five, Daisy Juarez hit four, Taylor Azevedo recorded a basket and Kylie Olson chipped in a free throw for the Lady Redskins.

“We’re working hard in practice and that is paying off really well for us,” Coach Ken Rickard commented. “The girls are still adjusting a little bit to the new system but they are picking it up solidly and we’re right where we want to be for now.”

Gustine improved to 4-0 in league play with the victory.

“Coming away from the first two weeks of league play with four wins is a huge step for us,” Rickard noted. “We’re focusing on the basics of basketball and that seems to be exactly what we need to worry about right now. We’ve got a bit of work still to do but there is no reason that we can’t stay competitive in every game from here on out.”

GHS 36, Delhi 25

The Lady Redskins led throughout their game last Monday against Delhi but were not able to seal the outcome until the late going.

Gustine took the lead early in the first but the Hawks were never more than six points away during the game and threatened to take the lead multiple times. But the Lady Redskins were able to hang on and pull away in the final seconds of the game.

Cruz had 10 points to lead the Lady Redskins. Alexandra Quezada and Terriquez each had eight, Luna recorded six and Stephanie Banuelos and Murillo each added a basket for Gustine.
