Rough week for varsity Redskins

Matt Veilleux goes up to block a Le Grand shot in varsity action last Friday.

The Gustine Redskins hoped to take momentum from their win over Denair into last week’s games against Ripon Christian and Le Grand but were unable to come away with a win.

After falling to the Knights earlier in the week, the Redskins hosted the Bulldogs on Friday but were turned away quickly and dealt a 57-29 defeat.

Le Grand took command of the game early, jumping out to a 38-12 lead at halftime, spurred by their outside shooting attack. The Redskins had a tough time finding the basket on offense and were unable to push the game back into their favor in the second half.

Matt Veilleux had 10 points to lead the Redskins. Henry Luis chipped in six, Johnathan Mello scored five, Andrew Gorshe added three, Thomas Mello and Tyler Crowley were each credited with a basket and Eduardo Sifuentes recorded a free throw.

“We pretty much got out played in both our games this week,” Coach Remberto Lopez commented. “We have a hard time scoring and moving the ball and our opponents are taking advantage of that by pressuring us into mistakes that we shouldn’t be making.”

The Redskins travelled to take on the Knights last Tuesday but were unable to steal a victory as the Knights were able to exploit holes in the Gustine defense and attack the basket.

Ripon Christian went up 28-12 at halftime and never looked back, pushing their lead to the final buzzer.

Veilleux led the Redskins with 13 points. Jose Barriga sunk seven, Mello had four and Luis put up two.

“We’re a team searching for an identity right now,” Lopez stated. “Our defense has kept us in some games but our offense has been a bit skeptical at best so we’re unable to really put runs together and that makes staying in games extremely difficult.”
