The Newman Lions Club has launched a club project to assist the Quilts of Honor program, which crafts quilts to present to veterans in appreciation of their service. The club will host a drawing at the Newman Fall Festival for a number of quilts donated  by area quilters. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. The Lions Club will have a booth at the Gustine Fourth of July festivities where some of the quilts will be on display. Tickets are available at Rabobank, Bank of the West and Mattos Newspapers in Newman, and Valley Real Estate in Gustine, or by calling Bill Mattos, 854-1000, or Bob Vizzolini, 862-2121. Mattos, pictured displaying one of the quilts which will be awarded as a drawing prize, is a veteran and a recipient of one of the Quilts of Honor, which hangs on the wall behind him.

The Friends of the Newman Library recently donated $1,500 to the local library branch. The donation represents proceeds from a book sale, as well as donations from volunteerism programs at Patterson Walmart and Kohl’s. The donation will go to the purchase of books and summer reading prizes.
