GUSTINE - The community’s Portuguese heritage will be celebrated this weekend, when the Gustine Pentecost Society hosts its annual festa.
A host of activities are in store, including processions, dances, bloodless bullfights, traditional foods and much more.
The festa starts with a 7 p.m. rosary and mass this evening (Thursday) at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles.
A rosary and mass will again be held at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by an evening of traditional fados music at the GPS Hall.
A full weekend of activities begins with the bodo de leite (parade of animals), which forms at 10 a.m. Saturday at OLM. The parade will make its way to the GPS Hall, where a meal of beef stew will be served to all present.
Following 7 p.m. mass at OLM, a procession with the crowns of the Holy Spirit will make its way to the GPS Hall, where a dance to the music of Sem Duvida will be held.
The traditional parade of visiting queens to mass starts Sunday festivities. The parade will form at 9 a.m. in front of the hall. Mass will be celebrated at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles at 10:30 a.m. Bishop Myron Cotta of the Stockton Diocese, the Rev. Antonio Silveira of San Jose and the Rev. Leonard Trindade will officiate.
Sopas will be served at the hall following the procession returning from mass.
A dance to the music of Chico Avila will be held at 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening at the hall.
The bullfights will take place Monday at Bella Vista Park. Gates open at 5 p.m. The bullfights begin at 8 p.m.
Ashlyn Alamo, daughter of Walter and Alicia Alamo, is the 2019-20 GPS senior queen. Her sidemaids are Kyleigh Brace, daughter of Josh and Chandra Brace, and Destany Karp, daughter of Steven Karp and Bernadette Delgado.
Sierra Torres, daughter of Rob and Kartie Torres, is the 2019-20 GPS junior queen. Her sidemaids are Camila Oliveira, daughter of James and Julie Oliveira, and Paloma Silva, daughter of Anthony and Gina Silva.
Ernie and Maria Longoria are presidents of the 2019 GPS Committee, which also includes Michael and Elizabeth Alves (vice presidents), Joe and Teresa Machado (secretary), John and Cecelia Pires (treasurers) and Carlos and Stephanie Fontes (marshals)
