Our Lady of Roses No. 221, YLI

Our Lady of Roses No. 221, YLI, celebrated the Christmas holiday with a Dec. 8 luncheon at The Kitchen at the Mission in Santa Nella. A gift exchange was enjoyed by all 20 officers and members in attendance.

A regularly scheduled meeting was held Dec. 11. Donations were made to various programs, including Newman Tots, Wounded Warriors and Nob Hill’s Food for Families program.

A successful bake sale fund-raiser was held Dec. 21 and 22 at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church.

Newman Garden Club

The Newman Garden Club will meet Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m. at Perry’s More Than Pizza.

Loretta Caton is hostess. She will be assisted by Karen Souza, Shirley Gorefsema, Pam Gomez, Dora Isola, Linda Ouse and JoAnn Olsen.

Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at various locations in Newman and Gustine. New members are always welcome.

The club’s January Garden of the Month is the home of Titi Schouten, 1135 Payne, Gustine.

American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion, Manuel M. Lopes Post 240, Auxiliary will meet Thursday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Green Acres Mobile Home Park clubhouse. Guests are welcome. For more information call Audrey McIntyre, 854-6094.

Portuguese Fraternal Society of America

The Portuguese Fraternal Society of America, Gustine-Newman Council 7, met Dec. 5 in OLM Parish Center I. Past President Luisiana Drumonde conducted the meeting.

Prior to the meeting members enjoyed a potluck dinner and an ugly sweater contest. Winners were Aurora Day, Rita Inacio, Oscar Drumonde and Luisiana Drumonde.

Council 7 will meet Friday, Jan. 10, at 6:30 p.m. in OLM Parish Center I. Member birthdays and anniversaries will be celebrated for the January challenge. Nancy Petersen will provide refreshments.

Gustine Seniors

Gustine Seniors will meet Friday, Jan. 10, at 12:30 p.m. at the Al Goman Community Center for a potluck luncheon and installation of 2020 officers.

Members are asked to bring a hot or cold dish to share, or donate to the potluck if they are unable to pring a dish.

The club will furnish the ham, rolls and table service.

Membership dues of $10 can be paid at the meeting. Dues increase to $12 after March 1.

New members are always welcome.

The kitchen crew for January and February includes Charlene DiGiorno and Lydia Contreras.

Gustine Historical Society

The Gustine Historical Society will host its annual luncheon and meeting Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Perry’s More Than Pizza in Gustine. The event begins at noon.

Khaled Bloom, descendant of Gustine pioneers, will be the guest speaker. His topic will be “Speculators and Homesteaders in the Gustine Area.”

The community is invited to attend.
