The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Joseph G. Rose Post 7635, Auxiliary met Aug. 6 at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Gustine.
Rhonda Montgomery, District 13 president, was a guest and spoke to the members on the value of being a member in the auxiliary. Rebecca Sandoval, District 13 vice president, was also in attendance.
A certificate of achievement for membership and first place in Division 3 was presented from District 13 and the state VFW organization, along with a certificate of recognition from the state VFW for the veterans and military support program. The awards will be displayed on the VFW Auxiliary activity board at the hall.
Mary Ann Watson was honored for an outstanding job with membership and presented a gift.
New member Nancy Soares was welcomed. She was installed by Montgomery.
Plans were discussed for the Aug. 20 barbecue at which 102-year-old veteran Frank Scesa will be recognized.
September events were discussed. They include Buddy Poppy days, a veteran recognition day at the former Castle Air Force Base, a teacher appreciation card project and the Newman Fall Festival.
The auxiliary meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall. Guests are welcome. Call 854-6620 for more information about the auxiliary.
The Gustine Seniors met Friday, Aug. 9, at the Al Goman Community Center for a Hawaiian-themed potluck luncheon to which Orestimba 50-Plus Club members were invited.
Sixty-nine members and guests were present.
Tables were covered with red table clothes and decorated with flowers. Members and guests were presented a lei when they arrived, and enjoyed a meal of hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and dessert.
President Cathy Mendonca welcomed 50-Plus Club members and the city workers who set up the tables and chairs for the seniors.
Mendonca led the group in reciting the pledge.
August birthdays and anniversaries were recognized.
Members with August birthdays include Helen Avila, Bill Francesconi, Madeline Lawrence, Lorraine Mendonca, John Martin and Jim Lagrutta. Each received a Bingo card.
Diann and Will Martin celebrate an August anniversary.
Kitty Ledford won the 50-50 drawing. Sue Avila won a gift donated by the Orestimba 50-Plus Club.
The club will meet Aug. 23. Cakes will be provided by Marge Auria, Juanita Ancalade, Virginia Souza and Liz Owens.
