‘K-9 Fun Run’ planned

The Tri-County Blue Line Alliance will sponsor a K-9 Fun Run Saturday morning, Aug. 31, as part of the Newman Fall Festival.

The event features 5K and one-mile runs, starting at 7 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. respectively at Pioneer Park.

Fifty percent of the proceeds will benefit the Newman Police K-9 Association.

Registration fee is $20 for adults; $15 for youth 17 and under; and $15 per person for teams of 10 or more. Teams are encouraged to create shirts honoring law enforcement or fallen officers.

Pre-registered participants may pick up their bib in front of the West Side Theatre Friday, Aug. 30, from 5-7 p.m.

Same day registration starts at 6 a.m. and closes promptly at 6:30 a.m.

All participants will receive a custom dog tag at the conclusion of the race.

All youngsters will be sworn in as junior police officers for the day and can participate in a “bad guy chase” at 7:45 a.m.

Bakers to compete

A baking contest will be part of the 2019 Newman Fall Festival.

Divisions include coffee cake, muffins, sweet rolls, quick breads, pies/cobblers and children’s (open to ages 8-14, who may create any of the baked goods listed).

A gift basket and plaque will be awarded for first place. Second- and third-place winners will receive ribbons.

The overall winner will receive a Fall Festival sweepstakes plaque.

Participants will submit their baked goods for judging Saturday, Aug. 31, at 8 a.m. at the L.J. Newman Memorial Center. All entries must be placed in disposable containers or plates. No dishes will be returned.

The baked goods will be served at the Fall Festival VIP coffee hour Sunday morning, Sept. 1, prior to the parade.

Cornhole tournament

Cornhole was a popular addition to the 2018 Newman Fall Festival.....and will be returning to the schedule of events for 2019 as well.

The cornhole tournament will be held Sunday, Sept. 1, beginning at 1 p.m. in Pioneer Park.

Two-person teams will compete. Cash prizes equivalent to 60 percent of entry fees will be awarded. The top three teams will earn cash prizes.

Registration fee is $40 per team through Friday, Aug. 30, at which time the entry fee increases to $50 per team.

Advance registration is requested. Teams may register at JJ Liquor. Teams registering in advance will be entered into a drawing for a prize (must be 21 or older to claim prize).

Registration will also be accepted from the conclusion of the Sunday morning parade to the start of the tournament.

The tournament is being co-sponsored by JJ Liquor and Coors Light.

Evening Under the Stars

Tickets are now available for the Newman Fall Festival “Evening Under the Stars” wine, micro-brew and cheese event which will be held Friday, Aug. 30, in Newman’s downtown plaza.

The event will include a live auction, silent auction, drawings for prizes and entertainment.

Wineries and breweries serving that evening include Dust Bowl Brewery, Blaker Brewing Co., Berryhill Winery, Stewart & Jasper and Ambro Vino Wines. The Newman Fall Festival will also sponsor a table.

Hearty appetizers prepared by In Good Taste Catering will be served.

A special addition to the evening is a silent auction featuring a variety of law enforcement-themed items, including blankets, blue line wreaths and pallet flags. Proceeds from the silent auction will go toward the construction of a law enforcement tribute which the Fall Festival Committee hopes to establish in Pioneer Park.

Drawings for prizes, an oral auction and entertainment will also be featured.

Hours are 7-11 p.m.

Tickets are $40 each and may be purchased at Mattos Newspapers or by contacting the Fall Festival through its Facebook page. An expanded capacity of 450 guests will be allowed this year, up 50 from the previous limit.

“We have sold out in past years,” said Julie Barcelos, chairman of the Fall Festival Committee. “We are hoping that with the addition of the new auction this year, and the cause involved, that we will sell out again even with the higher number of tickets.”

Little Mr., Miss; Miss Newman

The 2019 Little Mr. and Miss Newman Contest and Miss Newman Pageant will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, at the West Side Theatre.

The Little Mr. and Miss Newman Contest begins at 6 p.m., with the Miss Newman Pageant to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The two events are separately ticketed, and seating is limited. Tickets for the Little Mr. and Miss Newman Contest are $3. Admission to the Miss Newman Pageant is $5.

Benefit drawing

The Newman Fall Festival is hosting a benefit drawing to raise funds for its float maintenance.

Cash prizes of $300, $200 and $100 will be awarded in the drawing, which will be held Sunday evening, Sept. 1, at the Fall Festival.

Donation is $1 per ticket. Tickets are available at Mattos Newspapers and will be available at the Fall Festival booth in Pioneer Park during the event.

Participants need not be present to win.

Softball tournament

A softball tournament will close out the 2019 Newman Fall Festival Monday, Sept. 2.

Teams will compete at Barrington Park.

Entry fee for the co-ed tournament is $180.

Teams will take the field to start the competition at 9 a.m.

All teams will play a minimum of three games. Teams consist of 10 players plus substitutes. Each team must have a minimum of six men and four women.
