NEWMAN - An early-summer farmer’s market proved to be a hit with vendors and community members alike.
Now, the city of Newman and Newman Chamber of Commerce are partnering to offer an autumn version of the weekly event.
The “Harvest Market” will debut Friday, Sept. 20, in Newman’s downtown plaza. Hours are 3-7 p.m. The market will continue each Friday through Oct. 11.
Farm-fresh produce will be a staple of the weekly market. But organizers have also expanded the food offerings and introduced craft booths to the event to appeal to a broader audience.
A dozen food or produce vendors have signed up to participate, said chamber representative Michael Passarelli.
“Of those, five are returning from the farmer’s market this summer,” he noted. “The vendors were very pleased with Newman and with the general public who came to support the market. That is how we got them back. Typically, those vendors all know each other and talk with others....that’s where we got seven more vendors out of it.”
Alicia Mendoza, the city’s community liaison, said the fall market is an extension of the summer version - with changes that reflect feedback organizers heard in June.
“We got feedback from citizens who said they would love to have more out there. We had 15-18 booths at any given time, but we did not allow craft booths,” Mendoza remarked.
The craft booths, she said, are a good fit for the autumn market and the approaching holiday season.
“We want to stay away from a flea market venue, but still have something nice for the community to enjoy,” Mendoza commented.
Additional food options will also be featured at the harvest market.
“The community said that they wanted more food booths out there,” she noted. “We will have double the amount of food booths.”
The fall market will be located on the east side of the downtown plaza, fronting Highway 33.
“We want to try to catch the eye of the traveling public,” Mendoza said.
Entertainment will be offered each week.
Passarelli said organizers hope to replicate the success of the June market.
The plaza, he added, is an ideal venue to bring the community together for events such as the market.
“When the city created this plaza, this was the type of event they had in mind,” he commented. “The vision of the leaders of the community gave us this venue, and we are fortunate that this partnership between the city and the chamber is enabling us to put Newman’s best foot forward.”
Craft booth applications are still available for the upcoming market.
