The Newman Rotary Club honors a local public servant each quarter. The award recipients are chosen from the police department, city staff, fire department and school district.

Rotarians recently honored Bernice Arnett, the nurse for the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District.

Arnett was a registered nurse practicing for Dr. Ben Leonard in Gustine for 22 years before being hired in 2004 by the school district.

In order to become a school nurse, Arnett returned to college to obtain her school nurse services credential.

When Arnett joined the district she was the only nurse on staff and served the students and staff at each school site.

The district now has health personnel at each campus.

Sondra Olson, Newman Rotary’s vocational service chairperson, introduced Arnett to the club.

She praised Arnett for her skill and service and presented her with a bronze plaque as the Rotary Public School Employee of the Year.

Arnett and her husband Don have two daughters, Sarah Bagnani and Michelle Marroquin.

Marroquin is a teacher at Orestimba high and the adviser for the Orestimba Interact, a Rotary-sponsored club for students.
