County wide disposal system under study

A plan to form a countywide system for solid waste disposal was the result of a meeting last Thursday of county and city officials in Los Banos. The plan will be discussed further by members of Gustine City Council at their meeting Monday night Apr. 5.

By state law, cities and counties must stop open dump operations by Dec. 3 this year and go to what is commonly termed, “cut and fill” disposal.

A study of the problem has been underway for several months by Grunwald, Crawford & Associates of Hanford. Last Thursday’s meeting brought out that the most feasible operation would be for the establishment of two disposal sites in the county, with perhaps a third if found necessary. One would be located on the East Side of the County while the other would be located near Los Banos to serve that city, Dos Palos, Gustine and West Side rural residents.
