Legion Baseball Opener

American Legion Baseball comes to Newman.

Opener for the West Side Legion will come Friday night, when Turlock Legion will meet the locals at Warrior Park starting at 8 p.m. A return game will be played Sunday at Turlock.

The American Legion is planning to hold special ceremonies prior to Friday’s game to keynote the opening of the season.

Season tickets covering the 17-game schedule will be on sale at the gate Friday night for $5 each.

Dads Study Proposal to Improve Park Lighting

Gustine City Council Monday night took steps to complete the sale of the downtown street lighting system to the Pacific Gas & Electric Co., and asked for more time to study the Planning Commission’s recommendation for improved lighting in the city park and under grounding of guilty lines/and a report on the 1969-70 preliminary budget.

The City Dads also granted permission to the Gustine Pentecost Society to use city facilities and waived all fees. This annual celebration will be July 19-20.

Adopted a resolution commending Ronald Sanches, Gustine High School senior, who recently won top honors in the Botany Division at the Central Valley Science Fair and went on to place third in Botany at the International Science Fair held early this month in Fort Worth, Tex.

John Freitas Places 3rd in Truck Rodeo

John Freitas, driver for Ted Peters Trucking, Inc., won third place in the California State Truck Road-eo held May 18 in Los Angeles.

Freitas took his honors in driving in the double trailer division. Drivers from all parts of California compete in this driving skills event each year.

The Los Angeles event is the finals where regional winners from throughout the state gather to pit their driving skill and techniques. The event is sponsored by the California Trucking Association.
