Teams continue torrid race for Booster Club Tourney honors — Lively action on the diamond at Warrior Park has been in direct contrast to the chill weather that greeted the start of the 1st annual Orestimba Booster Baseball Tournament with fans being treated to a series of hotly contested games that will climax with the championship games on Saturday night. The eight teams participating in the tourney are: Denair, Bret Harte, Our lady of Mercy, Central Catholic, Ponderosa, Amador, Gustine and Orestimba. A special awards event will be held at close of the championship game Saturday night with handsome trophies going to each member of the winning team as well as team trophies. Gustine defeated Amador by a 4-2 count, scoring all their runs in the first inning on two walks followed by four singles hit by Clark, Ramirez, Lynn and Hartenberg. After that, nary a hit nor a run!

School election April 15 — In just 12 days, voters of the Newman-Gustine Joint Unified School District will select new trustees and whether to create a new trustee area. Tuesday April 15 is the school election date. Filing for posts are Edwin Tyler, Trustee Area No. 1 - Bonita; James “Pat” Noble, Ted Peters, Bob Maffel, Clovis Brant and Mrs. Dorlas Glimp, Trustee Area No. 2 - Newman-Gustine at large; and no one filed to seek the seat that is presently held by Mathew Fantasia, Trustee Area No. 3 - Romero. Tyler and Noble are the incumbents. However, Tyler is unopposed in his bid for re-election. Persons who desire to be in the race as a “write-in” candidate must file their intentions with the Merced County Registrar of Voters, not later than 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 10.

4th of July committee organizes — Plans are in the formative stage for the annual 4th of July celebration that is sponsored jointly by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts here. Hester Kuhiemeier is the secretary of the committee and the incoming commanders of each veteran’s post are the co-chairmen. They are Herb Ford for the VFW and Dan Serpa for the American Legion. They have held just one meeting so far, and this was more of an organization meeting rather than business type. However they have adopted a schedule for the meetings for that planning for the gala holiday can develop smoothly.
