Ugly Christmas sweaters were preferred wear at the December meeting of the Gustine FFA chapter.

Gustine FFA has been busy during the month of December. At school, during nutrition break and lunch, Gustine FFA students have been ringing the Salvation Army bell, collecting money for the charity. Students are also busy getting ready for finals and preparing for public speaking contests and judging team competitions. Members also began selecting fair animals, starting with beef and dairy, and will continue through January picking out pigs, sheep and goats.

Gustine FFA has begun preparing for various public speaking contests. On Saturday, Jan. 26 students will compete at the sectional contest at Merced College. “Super Saturday” consists of the following contests: Creed recitation, impromptu, prepared, extemporaneous, and job interview. Students will compete against FFA members from all 15 high schools in the Merced Mariposa Section. The top four finishers in each contest category will move on to the regional contest in February.

Ag Boosters will also be hosting their annual dinner dance the evening of Jan. 26 at the Al Goman Center. Tickets can be purchased from any Gustine Ag Booster member.

Several FFA members will be attending the Made for Excellence conference and Advanced Leadership Conference Feb. 9-10 in Modesto.

Gustine FFA has also been preparing and practicing for the spring judging season which starts up on March 2 the UC Davis field day.

Gustine FFA hosted its monthly meeting Wednesday, Dec. 12. The meeting included an ugly Christmas sweater theme and a white elephant gift exchange as the activity.

Azul Montes commented, “The Christmas-themed meeting was really fun! We had hot chocolate with marshmallows and a white elephant gift exchange. Everyone had a great time!”

Gustine FFA members collected items for a soldier care package which will be sent to Gustine High School graduate Jeremiah Laupua, who is serving in the Marine Corps and currently stationed in Kuwait. The items will be packaged up and mailed off by the Gustine FFA chapter officers on Friday, Dec. 14
