GUSTINE - Gustine has welcomed a new addition to its business community as owner Dom Kemp opened up shop to serve up delicious barbecue.
Kemp located in Gustine because he had a friend in town and also due to the fact that there were no barbecue joints in the immediate Gustine-Newman area.
The takeout restaurant, located at 374 Fifth St., specializes in ribs, chicken
Kemp BBQ came about from the feedback he was receiving in response to videos on Facebook of himself making food for college kids and bachelors, teaching them how to cook and on a budget. He also gained greater attention and built his reputation for good barbecue by catering.
“I really liked to see people being brought together by food,” said Kemp, “and the fulfillment they receive when trying my barbecue.”
Kemp did not go to culinary school so all his recipes and techniques are self-taught, reached through trail and error and often based on long-standing family recipes. His sauces and dry seasoning rubs are all his own recipes, crafted with use of common ingredients.
“I really just started cooking a lot for myself and other people,” Kemp told Mattos Newspapers. “So once I did that and people started giving me good feed back and told me I was good enough to do this for a living, I took it seriously.”
An average day for Kemp starts around 6 a.m. when he preps the meat, which is shipped in fresh every day. Along with that he will then season and smoke the meat until late morning, by which time it is ready for the lunch crowd.
He plans to be open Monday thru Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 6pm, Fridays from 12:30-7 p.m., and weekends from noon to 5. He can also be contacted for advance orders at (209) 617-2707.
