West Stanislaus Fire Protection District firefighter Richard Gerety III was welcomed home with fanfare from the West Side community after spending more than a month in recovery for injuries he sustained fighting the Caldor Fire.

Gerety was on his 10th day as part of a four-man strike team fighting the Caldor Fire in El Dorado County when he sustained second and third degree burns to his hands, arms and legs.

Gerety had skin grafts and has spent the last month recuperating at UC Davis Medical Center. He returned to his Patterson home on Sept. 29.

Gerety works as a mechanic and started volunteering for the fire department in 2017. He and his wife, Newman native Jennifer Gerety, have a two-year-old son.

His return home was made in a fire engine and was heralded by fire engines from area agencies lining the route. Friends, neighbors, and family came out to cheer his homecoming.

“It was amazing to see and we are so grateful,” Jennifer said. “Richard thanks everyone for every thought, prayer and donation. It made all this easier for him, seeing how much support our family received.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family. The account can be reached at https://gofundme.com by searching Richard Gerety.
