Health summit Monday in Gustine

The city of Gustine will host a “healthy choices” summit Monday, Aug. 19, at the Al Goman Center.

The event is held in conjunction with the “Healthy Choices for Our West Side” initiative launched by the West Side Health Care Advisory Task Force.

The summit will be held from 5-7 p.m.

The evening includes the weigh-out for the “Biggest Loser” weight loss challenge which started June 24 in Newman.

A variety of health care providers and resource agencies will be on hand.

Food service consulting firm Sodexo will donate sandwiches for the free event and provide nutritional information.

The Merced County Department of Public Health will provide information on chronic diseases, diabetes, stress and smoking cessation.

Rescue 74 owner Richard Martin will offer free blood pressure checks.

A mobile mammogram unit will offer assistance with making mammogram appointments.

Emanuel Medical Center and Livingston Community Health/Las Palmas Health Center will be providing information on their services.

Friends of the Gustine Library will take part with children’s activities.

The Central Valley Traveling Library will be distributing books at the event.

Drawings for prizes will also be held.

A chair yoga demonstration is also in store.

OLM Celebration angels, choir

Rehearsals will begin Aug. 12 for youth interested in participating in the upcoming Our Lady of Miracles Celebration novenas as angels or choir children.

Practices will be held Aug. 12, 14, 19, 21 and 26 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles.

Gustine recreation programs

The city of Gustine is sponsoring a number of upcoming programs.

Final sessions of water zumba started Aug. 14 and continue through Sept. 9. Water zumba sessions meet  Mondays and Wednesdays. Morning (10-11 a.m.) and evening (6:30-7:30 p.m.) sessions are offered.

Fee is $35 for the eight-session course. Drop-ins are welcome if space available. Drop-in fee is $6.

Yoga sessions begin each month, with sessions meeting at 5:30p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays on the second floor of the Odd Fellows Building.

Chair yoga is offered Tuesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. at the Al Goman Community Center. Fee is $35 for full session, $25 for half session and $6 for one-session drop-ins.

Free rides for commuters

The Stanislaus Regional Transit (StaRT) commuter program is offering free rides between stops in Turlock and Patterson and the Dublin BART station through the month of August.

The service runs weekdays. The bus picks up riders at the Patterson Walmart at 4:55 a.m., arriving in Dublin at 6:10 a.m. The return trip leaves Dublin at 4:45 and arrives in Patterson at 6:15 p.m.

Newman library

The Newman branch library will offer a variety of activities through the month of August.

Wee move & play sessions will be held at 10:30 a.m. each Wednesday through the month.

A melted crayon art craft for adults will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17.

Family “Toy Story” time is planned for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20.

A LEGO day is planned for Thursday, Aug. 22, at 3:30 p.m.

A “dino dig” activity at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, offers the opportunity for participants to excavate an area and identify their own fossils.

MOPS and Moms

Harvest Community Church in Crows Landing is hosting monthly “MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) and MomsNext” meetings as well as various activities designed to build a supportive community of mothers and mothers-to-be. The group meets from 9-11 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the church, 225 Fifth St., Crows Landing, and holds a play date on the third Tuesday of each month. Other activities include service projects and moms nights out.
