Newman tree lighting virtual this year
The Newman Chamber of Commerce and city of Newman will host a virtual lighting of the downtown community Christmas tree Saturday evening, Dec. 5 rather than inviting the public to gather for a live event.
The lighting will be streamed through social media, including the city Facebook page.
Organizers said the brief program will begin at 6 p.m. and include remarks by the mayor and possibly other city officials.
FDES fish takeout
The Newman FDES will host a takeout fish dinner Friday, Dec. 4. Drive-through meal pickup will be from 4-7 p.m. at the FDES Hall. The dinner includes fish filet, potatoes, salad, bread and wine. Donation is $30. For tickets call 678-1474 or 595-2075.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Joseph G. Rose Post 7635, Auxiliary will meet Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Gustine.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
Those attending are asked to wear a mask.

Portuguese Fraternal Society of America
PFSA, Council 7 Gustine-Newman, will hold a Zoom meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2. President John Salvador will send out the invitation with all the necessary information. Christmas light competition
The city of Gustine Recreation Department is hosting a Christmas light competition.
Categories include home, village, tree, bar and street/block (four-house minimum). Photos or videos of holiday light decorations may be posted on their Facebook page or Instagram with the hashtag #GUSTINECHRISTMAS2020.
