CPR, first aid course

The Gustine Recreation Department is sponsoring a certified CPR and first aid course Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 18 and 20, at the Al Goman Community Center.

Cost is $60 and includes both classes, workbook and materials.

Those successfully completing the course will receive a two-year CPR and first aid certification. Attendance at both sessions is required for certification.

Art walk planned

West Side artists, creatives and art-based businesses will have an opportunity to exhibit their art at a downtown Newman art walk planned for Saturday, March 14.

The event is sponsored by the Newman Chamber of Commerce.

Participation is free for exhibitors and the attending public.

The event will be held from 3-6 p.m., and will focus on the arts, architecture and the historic legacy of several downtown Newman buildings.

A student art contest open to all K-12 students in Newman, Crows Landing and Gustine is being held in conjunction with the art walk. The winning entry will be featured as the cover of the art walk passport (which directs visitors to art walk stops.)

Contest entries must contain the name and date of the event (Downtown Newman Art Walk, 3/14/20) and have a finished area of 4 inches by 5.25 inches. All entries must be able to be scanned or submitted electronically.

The deadline for entering the art walk or cover contest is Friday, Feb. 28.

AA meetings weekly in Gustine

Free AA meetings are held every Wednesday evening in Gustine.

The meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. in the community room of the Gustine library, 205 Sixth St.

Newman branch library

A full slate of activities is on the schedule for February at the Newman branch library.

Story time is held at 10 a.m. each Wednesday, followed by a wee move & play session.

LEGO days will be held Thursdays, Feb. 13 and 27, at 3:30 p.m. Children under 4 are welcome but must have adult supervision.

Friends of the Newman Library book sales will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 25, from noon to 6 p.m.

Orestimba reunion planned for October

A reunion of Orestimba High classes of all years through 1978 is being planned for the weekend of Oct. 22-25.

The “big” OHS reunion has been held every five years dating back to the 1980s, bringing together classmates from decades past.

The 2020 reunion coincides with the Orestimba homecoming.

Alumni will be invited to participate in the homecoming parade, either in class groups as individual parade entries or as part of an overall reunion float.

Alumni will also be recognized at the homecoming football games and have designated seating.

The big reunion will be held Saturday evening, Oct. 24, at the FDES Hall, where alumni will gather for a dinner, class photos and more.

A Sunday picnic in the park will bring the reunion weekend to a close.

Sponsorship contributions are being accepted to help defray the expense of the reunion. Contributions, as classes or individuals, may be mailed to: OHS Reunion 2020, P.O. Box 173, Newman 95360. Checks may be made payable to OHS Reunion 2020.

Registration packets will be mailed to classmates of 1978 and prior years in the spring.

TOSCA applications

The Orestimba Scholarship Community Association, better known as TOSCA, is accepting scholarship applications.

Current seniors or any graduate from a high school in the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District in 2010 or following years are eligible to apply.

Graduating high school seniors applying for an academic scholarship to a four-year college or university must have a GPS of not less than 3.0 An unweighted grade point average will be used for awarding scholarships.

As another new part of the application process, college students will be asked to write a brief essay which cites a famous quote which applies to them and explain why.

Students applying for graduate or credential program studies are asked to include their undergraduate transcripts.

Scholarship applications are available from the TOSCA website, www.toscascholarships.org.

Applications must be mailed to: TOSCA, P.O. Box 18, Newman 95360, and postmarked no later than March 31. Hand-delivered application packets will not be accepted.

All required materials must be included in the application packet. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

The TOSCA scholarship awards banquet will be held Wednesday, May 20.
