NCLUSD summer school

The Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District will host a summer school enrichment program geared to TK-5 students.

The digital program will offer a variety of activities. Some will be completed online, while others do not involve computer use.

“The teachers we picked are very creative,” said Randy Fillpot, district superintendent. “We encouraged them to come up with things that are engaging and entertaining to students that they wouldn’t see in their normal coursework, and to test some things that we might be looking at in the future.”

The summer school program can be accessed on the district website (via the “remote learning” tab on the home page).

Fillpot said participants need not be Newman-Crows Landing students.

An article appearing in the May 21 edition incorrectly stated that the Our Lady of Miracles Catholic School Spring Festival virtual live auction would be conducted by the Turlock Livestock Auction Yard. The auction was facilitated by Turlock Livestock Video Sales.

Youth soccer sign-ups

The Newman Recreation Department is accepting registration for 2020 youth soccer in hopes that a program can be held.

Recreation Director Alicia Mendoza said she anticipates knowing in early July whether the season can be held, but in the meantime is preparing for that eventuality.

The co-ed program is open to players ages 5 to 14 (must be 5 by Sept. 1, and if 14 must be in the eighth grade).

Fee is $50 per player, with a $5 discount for additional siblings. A $10 fee is added for participants who live outside the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District.

Registration forms may be downloaded from the city website at For those unable to download a form, registration information may be picked up from 2-5 p.m. weekdays from the teen center on Hardin Road. The center is only open to allow parents to pick up registration forms.

Registration is accepted through June 26, followed by late registration/waiting list from June 29-July 3 (registration is $60 during late sign-ups).

Parents are asked to drop completed registration forms and payment (checks only are accepted) at Newman City Hall, 938 Fresno St. Checks will be returned if the season is not played.

Volunteer coaches and assistant coaches are also needed.
