Kids’ fishing days
The Gustine Recreation Department, with the help of community sponsors, will host its annual kids fishing event later this month.
The fishing day will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19-20, at the Schmidt Park pond.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, those participating must register in advance to reserve a spot. Recreation Coordinator Tiffany Vitorino said eight-food circles (or pods), each separated by six feet, will be created around the pond.
Morning and afternoon sessions are offered each day.
The event is open to youth 16 and under. Registration fee is $1 per pod.
Participants are asked to bring their own fishing gear.
All participants will receive a goodie bag and be entered into drawings for prizes that will be held in the days leading up to the event. The registration deadline is Sept. 14.
Those participating are asked to remain in family/household groups and have facial coverings available to use if needed.
Families may register through the Gustine City Hall website.
Donations are being accepted for the event.

Newman 4-H Club
The Newman 4-H Club will host a drive-through enrollment event Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Densmore Park (adjacent to Newman branch library). The event begins at 6 p.m.
Enrollment fee is $60 per member and $25 per leader. The 4-H program is open to youth ages 5-18.
Project areas for the 2020-21 fiscal year include dairy and beef cattle, rabbits, poultry, goats, sheep, arts and crafts, beading, home arts, folk art, leadership, public speaking, shooting sports/archery, vegetable gardening, succulent gardening and primary members.

Gustine sets recycling, disposal events
The city of Gustine has scheduled a number of events at which residents of the city can dispose of paint, mattresses, tires and e-waste at no charge.
A paint recycling drop-off event will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the south parking lot of Schmidt Park. Paint must be in sealed, original containers with original manufacturer label. No aerosols or solvents will be accepted.
Participants must register prior to drop-off and may do so at https://paint-gustine.eventbrite.com. Those unable to register online may call 855-PAINT09.
Materials for drop-off should be placed in vehicle trunk or truck bed. During drop-off participants are asked to remain in their vehicle and unlock trunk to allow staff to remove the paint materials.
Participants should not attend if anybody in their household is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. Participants are asked to wear masks and limit vehicle occupancy to member of their household living unit.
Tire, mattress collection
The city will host a tire and mattress collection event Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8 a.m. to noon at the recycling yard on 750 East Ave., Gustine.
Residents may dispose of up to nine passenger vehicle tires and any number of mattresses at no charge. Participants are asked to remain in their vehicle. Face coverings are required if a participant must exit the vehicle to allow access to the items being disposed of.
The event is not open to businesses.
A free e-waste and recycling collection will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Al Goman Community Center. Televisions, computers and computer accessories and other small electronic devices are accepted.
Metal items, plastic containers and clothing are also accepted at the recycling event.
Those participating are asked to separate items by material type and device type prior to attending the event.
Face masks are required if exiting the vehicles.
