Enrollment on the upswing in NCLUSD
NEWMAN - A new school year got under way Monday in the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District, where enrollment increases were reported on most campuses.

While the district-wide enrollment most likely won’t stabilize for several days as students continue to filter in, early indications point to significant increases.

Just counting the students who physically were in attendance Monday, Superintendent Rick Fauss said, attendance was up nearly 60 students over opening day of a year ago.

No city interest in picking up dog park project

NEWMAN - A dog park does not appear to be in the city’s immediate future.

City Council members discussing the future use of a half-acre of land near Sherman Park last Tuesday expressed no interest in completing development of a dog park started by a local non-profit organization.

If anything, the city may simply plant grass on the site and consider other uses at a later date.

New vote count accepted, but rate hikes delayed

City will not immediately enact voter-approved assessment increases in light of mistakes

NEWMAN - An erroneous tabulation of ballots submitted on proposed increases to the city’s lighting and landscaping district assessments was overturned last week by the City Council, which certified a recount showing the new rates had been approved after all.

The action came two weeks after the city approved an initial ballot tally showing that property owners had voted down the higher assessments.

One injured in Newman shooting
NEWMAN - Gunfire erupted in what police believe to be a gang-related incident in downtown Newman last Tuesday, Aug. 10, leaving one man injured.

The 18-year-old male victim was suffered a wound in the foot when shots were fired shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Officers converged on the area of Main and Tulare after receiving reports of shots fired. Witnesses said occupants of a blue Honda with tinted windows and a spoiler were shooting into a group of people who fled westbound on Tulare Street and into a nearby residential neighborhood.
