The Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District Board of Trustees and superintendent would like to thank the voters for their unwavering support for our children by passing Measure R. We would especially like to thank the following members of the Citizens in Favor of Measure R Committee for their tireless efforts: chairman and headquarters host, City Councilman Ted Kelly; block captain and supreme volunteer Bob McConnell; treasurer Vicki Felber; sign captain Don Arnett; Diablo Grande coordinator and school board member Janice Conforti; Spanish translator Olivia Gonzalez; and student representative Jessica Smyers.

Tournament organizers thank all who sponsored, participated
Thursday, October 16, 2008

To the editor:

On behalf of the Gustine Chamber of Commerce, I would like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to all the business owners and individuals who supported our 12th annual golf tournament as hole sponsors, to those who contributed prizes for our tee bags, which were given to all golfers who participated in the tournament, and to those who donated items for our drawing.

I would like to thank all the golfers who played in our tournament, and invite them to participate again next year.

A big thank you to the committee members who helped with the tournament. Without their help and support it would not be possible to put this event together. Our appreciation goes out to the crew who handled our registration booth, took photos of the foursomes, our spotters on the three-par holes, our set-up crew for the dinner and Miss Gustine and her court.

Special thanks to Lucie Lucas and County Bank for sponsoring our dinner, and to Pat Borrelli and his crew, who once again did a great job in preparing the dinner which followed the tournament. Also thanks to Bill Nunes for the great green beans.

We had invited guests from our adopted squadron out of Lemoore Naval Air Station who participated in the tournament, Marines and Navy, to show our appreciation for their service to our country. They were outstanding young people, and couldn’t thank our chamber enough for what we are doing for them.

Again, thank you all for the support which enabled us to have a very successful event.

I would like to announce that our 13th annual chamber golf tournament will be held at the Stevinson Ranch Golf Course Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009.

Joe DeGregori, Tournament Chairman

Immersion the quickest, easiest way to master a language
Friday, October 3, 2008

To the editor:

I read with interest the article regarding English learners. I have always questioned the validity of the ESL program, and it is apparent that too much tax money is being wasted.

If you start a child at 3 in Head Start; 4 in pre-school; 5 in kindergarten; 6 in first grade; and 7 in second, that child should be English literate in the third grade.
