Jerry Brown announcement sets the stage for state race

JERRY BROWN IS IN. While most of us who follow politics knew all along former Governor Jerry Brown (now California Attorney General) would enter the race for governor on the Democratic side, he waited until the last possible moment to declare his candidacy. On Tuesday, Brown announced he was in. This came a few weeks after Senator Dianne Feinstein said she would not run for governor. Now the drama unfolds, and this will be a very interesting race in the Golden State.

Elected officials have full plate of challenges, tough decisions

FRENCH QUARTER SOMETIME SOON. After reading over last week’s column, now I understand why some of you thought I was heading to New Orleans. I alluded to the fact that I couldn’t wait to get there again, now that the Super Bowl Saints have brought so much more energy and optimism to that Katrina-devastated area. This excerpt from that column certainly makes one think I was on my way:

“I love New Orleans. The food and fun (and the beignets) are to die for! I haven’t seen my cousin in more than a year, and it’s time I get there to enjoy Bourbon Street and celebrate!”

Super Bowl Sunday produced memorable game

SUPER DAY FOR BOWL. Well, the New Orleans Saints defied all odds and won the Super Bowl. It was one of the finest games ever! Did you know that the game was watched (or at least the television sets were on) by more people than any other show?…..EVER! More people tuned into this game than watched the Academy Awards last year, which is usually one of the most watched television shows each year. I was anxious to watch the advertising, but I spent too much time talking and eating to pay attention. Budweiser once again won the hearts of many; and even though the ads cost upwards of $3 million each, the huge audience should have pleased every company that was seeking our business. I know my cousin in New Orleans was excited about the game. And Bourbon Street was awash with happy people, both locals and visitors. The Saints helped that city kick off its popular Mardi Gras!
