To the editor:

On June 15 I was involved in an auto accident between Gustine and Newman, and my car ended up in an orchard. I was alone.

I called AAA for assistance, and they in turn contacted the local emergency crews who arrived quickly.

After traipsing around in a muddy orchard by myself, slowly comprehending the severity of the damage to my vehicle and realizing how fortunate I was to have not been injured, the shakes were setting in – as well as the stiffness to my neck and back.

I cannot express the comforting feeling of having friends, people you know, arrive on the scene and take over for you.

These gentlemen were caring, sincere and very gracious. One of these wonderful men even had me sit on the bumper of the fire truck, first making sure it wasn’t too hot from the sun, and used water from the fire hose and his hands to wash the mud off my feet. Another one washed and dried my shoes and returned them to me. They made sure that all the necessary reports were completed and the proper authorities contacted, and then drove me home.

A simple thank you doesn’t seem enough.

If wonder if these gentlemen even realize the impacts that their actions have on the people they serve. While I knew some who responded to the call, I don’t mean to suggest that a stranger would have been treated any differently.

They are so well trained, willing to help others (even on Father’s Day) and remember the human aspect while performing their duties.

We are fortunate to have such true gentlemen serving in that capacity, and I appreciate all that they do for the community.

They make me proud to say that I am from Gustine!
