GUSTINE – Highway 33 was closed at the north edge of the city for most of the day last Wednesday after a big rig snagged a utility line and snapped several poles.

The mid-morning mishap left a dozen customers without electricity until shortly before 7 p.m., according to PG&E spokesperson Nicole Tam.

California Highway Patrol officer Lance Velez said the accident occurred when a trucker pulled off Highway 33 into a dirt area where he had parked in the past. This time, however, his trailer caught a wire and downed several poles.

Fire Chief Pat Borrelli said three telephone poles and a Pacific Gas & Electric power pole were pulled down.

The power pole held two transformers, one of which reportedly broke and spilled oil at the scene which was contained by an environmental remediation team from PG&E.

Highway 33 was closed between North Avenue and Bambauer Road until early evening.

Velez identified the driver of the 1984 Freightliner as Steven Alexander, 48, of Manteca.

No injuries were reported.
