To the editor:

This is in response to the article in the West Side Index/Gustine Press-Standard of July 8 about the 95th birthday celebration for Alberta Kniebes.

I was in Alberta (Roberts) Kniebes second-grade class in 1942.

I will always remember the summer after my second grade, when Miss Roberts spent part of her summer tutoring me in reading and spelling so I would be ready for the following year in the third grade. Thanks for all your help in my years of education at P Street Elementary School. I have an original picture of our class of ‘42 in front of the school.

Mrs. Sam Kniebes is also my aunt, through her marriage to Sam, who was my grandmother “Hattie” Hollister’s nephew, who was Uncle Al Kniebes’ sister-in-law.

After saying all that, Happy Birthday Alberta, and I hope you have many more.

On another note about the schools in Newman, I read in one of your articles about the graduates from Yolo Middle School.

I would like to offer my congratulations to the young man who received the Donald Davis Cup. I was the first recipient of the cup, 60 years ago, when I graduated from Yolo Grammar School.

S.W. McConnell was the principal who presented the award. Thanks for all the great memories.
