The field of potential candidates for local races on the November ballot has remained unchanged over the past week.
As of Tuesday, no new candidates had emerged for city races in Newman and Gustine and for the West Side Healthcare District Board of Directors.
Newman voters will elect a mayor, two council members and a city treasurer when they go to the polls in November.
As of Tuesday, incumbent Bob Martina was the only candidate in the council race. The other incumbent whose term of office expires this year, Mike Crinklaw, had previously announced he would not seek re-election.
A possible race for the mayor’s race is shaping up, however, as both incumbent John Fantazia and current council member Ed Katen had taken out papers. Neither had filed to officially become a candidate.
Treasurer David Reed has taken out papers to run for that position.
Gustine has two city races on the November ballot.
Voters there will also be electing a mayor and two council members. Nobody had taken out papers for the mayor’s race as of Tuesday, although incumbent Rich Ford had announced that he would seek re-election.
Incumbent Joe Oliveira and former city public works director Lynn Schultz have filed for the council race. The second incumbent whose term expires, Jim Bonta, has announced he will not seek re-election.
Four seats on the Westside Healthcare District Board of Directors are on the November ballot. Appointed incumbent George Schmidt (city of Newman zone) is the only declared candidate. The other three seats are currently held by David Varnell (rural Gustine zone), Georgette Homen (Stevinson zone) and Steve Pometta (rural Newman zone).
Newman city candidates may file at Newman City Hall.
Gustine city candidates may file at the Merced County elections office.
Candidates for the healthcare district board, which oversees operations of the West Side Ambulance, may file in their respective county elections office.
The filing period closes Aug. 8. The nomination period for races in which the incumbents do not file is extended until Aug. 13. Incumbents cannot file after the initial Aug. 8 deadline. |
