OUR CELL PHONES! ARE THEY HEALTHY? Over the years I’ve had lots of questions pass through my mind about the health aspects of cell phones. Most of that concern came from my continual use of my phone. While it’s not pressed to my ear every second, I certainly have used it consistently for the past eight or more years, and hardly anyone (except Delta Blood Bank and politicians during an election) calls my home phone. Some days I don’t even look for messages from my home phone. In fact, when you call my home, I immediately give you my cell number, because I carry it with me whether I’m gardening (I try not to do this much), shopping, in a business meeting or at a friend’s home. I’ve learned texting well, because my phone is always on vibrate, and I don’t answer it when socializing in a biz meeting or at church (I wish I was in church more).
What has worried me the most is the fact that I carry my phone on my right hip, the side of my body where my arthritis is obvious and a nerve around there has caused me some major hurt. My chiropractor solved the hip problem, and now I stretch on an exercise ball every morning after walking two to three miles. But I still worry about the effects of that cell phone that rests on my hip at least 10 hours a day and sometimes up to 16 hours.
Well friends, I have found the answers to some of my questions in one of my favorite men’s magazines, “Best Life.” Brain tumors are possible if you keep that phone on your ear hour after hour (better talk to your kids). Until recently, the majority of research indicated little or no link between cell phones and cancer. And while the World Health Organization and the American Cancer Society maintain that cell phones pose no threat, several new long term studies are finding that there certainly may be a risk. Here is what I found (you should do your own research):
• Do cell phones cause cancer? One study showed that mobile phone users are twice as likely to develop malignant, difficult-to-treat brain tumors. This study was published last year in the journal “Occupational Environmental Medicine.” Unless the phone is more than two inches from your ear, you are affected by its radiation.
• Cell phones give off radiation whenever they are on. The radiation is stronger when we are talking or messaging. And the farther the phone is from a base station, the more radiation your phone must emit. We can reduce our exposure to the radiation by making calls only when we have strong reception, hang up before our phone heats up and/or store your phone away from your body when not in use.
This is where I get worried. My phone is still on my hip. One study says that there is no link to testicular cancer, however another says there is a link to male infertility. Other studies show concerns about children using cell phones, and we know there are thousands of young men and women using phones for the Internet and more.
This was only one article with its own sources, and I urge you to do your own research. I look at cell phones as a risk-versus-benefit issue, and I still carry my phone just about everywhere I go.
DINOSAURS A HIT AT COUNTY FAIR. The Jurassic Park exhibit is drawing big time raves by visitors of all ages at the Stanislaus County Fair. The special Disneyland-like exhibit is packed every night, and you can expect big time daytime crowds this weekend as well. Of course the free entertainment, show animals and carnival are venues attracting Central Valley residents as well. The fair ends Sunday, and its your best value in local entertainment right now. The food is certainly something you won’t want to miss either!!!
Written by Benita, on 06-08-2008 07:34 I think it is right to be wary of the consequences that may be due to cell phone use and reading this article with afirmitive and negative sides I can't help but to feel vulnerable when my phone is in my pocket. |
