NEWMAN – A Saturday evening fire caused extensive damage to a home in the 1900 block of Taylor.

Fire Chief Mel Souza said investigators believe a candle started the blaze.

Firefighters arrived to find one bedroom engulfed in flames.

They were able to contain the fire damage to that room, Souza said, but there was extensive smoke damage to the remainder of the home.

“We had a good knock-down on it,” Souza commented. “We were fortunate that it wasn’t in the attic, but there was still a lot of damage to the house.”

The occupants were able to escape the burning home safely, he said, and firefighters successfully rescued two dogs.

Two engines and 10 firefighters responded to the call.

Firefighters were called back to the damaged home to extinguish a spot fire at about 1 a.m. Sunday.

Souza said damage to the home was estimated at $75,000.
