It’s Christmas – wow! Seems like just yesterday that we were planning for the New Year and thinking that the holidays were so far away. I have written it here many times and I have to write it again – where does the time go???
This holiday season poses some interesting deadlines for the staff at your newspaper. I am writing this column on Saturday so that we can put the paper together on Sunday and have it ready to go for printing on Wednesday in order for you to still receive it on your regular delivery of Thursday (for all of you in-town subscribers.) The same will go for next week and the New Year celebrations.
I have not wrapped one gift yet but am one of the lucky ones who does not have to venture out and join the last minute shoppers in what I call a “shopping frenzy.” There is something to be said for that. In addition, I visited the grocery store in the later hours of the night to get ingredients for all of requested menu items. The menu doesn’t change much from year to year as each of the girls has their favorites – and that’s what the holidays are all about. Family, food and fun!
News gathering is relatively slow at this time of year as most agencies are in the vacation mode and really won’t get back to business until the beginning of 2008.
This is a very rewarding time for us, though, as we are able to showcase the generosity of others by publishing photos of our local toy and food drives. So many needy children and families were helped this year because of the gracious giving of our communities and organizations. We truly are blessed.
The holidays are truly meant to be spent with family and friends, enjoying the simple pleasures of life. Having a new little grandchild around the house will be a wonderful experience for all of my family and we can hardly wait until Samuel will be old enough to enjoy the whole “Santa” experience. This year, I will take my joys in just snuggling him close and kissing on him until he is totally annoyed with me. It’s the little things!!
While I have the pure joy of having a new little one in my life, I know that there are many who are mourning the loss of a loved one this holiday season. Please don’t forget those who may need a visit or simple phone call to let them know that you care and that someone is there for them. As they cherish their memories, help them with the healing. That is a special gift that you can give yourself – the gift of a helping hand.
We wish each and everyone a very blessed and wonderful holiday and a very Happy New Year!
