To the editor:
In a story about unlicensed drivers (Dec. 20)s, it was stated that if a vehicle is impounded, its owner must show a valid license and proof of insurance before it is released., Newman
What is not said is that the vehicle can be impounded for up to 30 days. Unfortunately, recently as a parent I made a bad decision and let my son drive without a license and he got stopped downtown.
In the vehicle was an over-25 licensed passenger, and the vehicle was registered and insured, but not in our name. We had just purchased the vehicle that night, and planned to add it to our insurance the next day.
My wife went down to where this was going on to show that we had just purchased the vehicle that night, and was told that it was being impounded.
The next day she went down to to Newman Police Department and was told she had to return the next day for a post-impound hearing.
At that hearing, we were told what a bad decision I had made and all that could have gone wrong.
We understand I made the wrong choice, and will deal with that, but the police chief said to make a point he was going to keep the vehicle for 30 days.
That is done on a case by case basis and it could be a costly mistake.

Written by joe, on 17-03-2008 06:14 Read your drivers handbook, it's not just Newman that does that, it is part of the cvc in california. Un licenced and suspended licence drivers are why our insurance rates are so high. As a parent you are supposed to set a good example for your children, not teach them that its ok if you dont get caught. You got what you deserve. |
