To the editor:
I guess everyone has a small gripe about something, and as will become demonstrably obvious so do I.
Most people find it offensive when someone pulls up next to them with the car stereo playing loudly and the bass speakers hitting hard enough to rattle your teeth, or when some inconsiderate wretch sprays graffiti on public property.
Rightfully so, because these are a form of pollution to the senses and these things contribute to a negative perception of the type of atmosphere prevalent in the town where they are done.
But what about the ongoing offense to the sense of smell in and around Gustine? I understand that some issues will be inevitable living in a small town surrounded by dairies, but are the owners of these businesses practicing the Golden Rule?
Is there perhaps something that can be done to minimize the problem? I am not an expert on this, but I have noticed that some dairies smell to high heaven while others don’t. And I realize that it may smell like money to the people who own these businesses, but it does not smell that way to me and is in fact very offensive.
Do we want Gustine to be known as a wonderful little town that is a delight to the eye and nose, or are we okay with following your nose to find it?

Written by Joe, on 17-03-2008 06:30 You live in a farming community and you are complaining about the smell of the farms? How about if we just shut the dairies down? Then you can complain about the 8 dollar a gallon milk. If you dont like the smell of the farms, dont live by them. |
Written by Elio Alves, on 03-04-2008 04:49 I realize that some smell comes with the territory and can't be helped and I am not complaining about the normal smell but rather about the excessive bad smell so please just take a deep breath and relax Joe. :>) |
