INCREDIBLE EGGS MAKING THEIR MARK.  The West Side’s egg producers provide us with products that are lauded these days for quality and healthfulness. It wasn’t too long ago when eggs had a bad reputation for high cholesterol content, but in reality eggs do not raise blood cholesterol in most people….and according to the latest Wellness Letter from the University of California at Berkeley, they may even be good for your heart and your eyes and your life! The newsletter concludes its report with these words:

INCREDIBLE EGGS MAKING THEIR MARK.  The West Side’s egg producers provide us with products that are lauded these days for quality and healthfulness. It wasn’t too long ago when eggs had a bad reputation for high cholesterol content, but in reality eggs do not raise blood cholesterol in most people….and according to the latest Wellness Letter from the University of California at Berkeley, they may even be good for your heart and your eyes and your life! The newsletter concludes its report with these words:

“Eggs are good food. Most people can eat one or two a day. Just don’t mess them up by preparing them with fatty, salty ingredients or serving them with unhealthy side dishes.”

California has fallen in the national rankings for egg production. Not long ago, the state produced more eggs than any other state. Today we rank about fifth, with Iowa soaring above all others….Much of this is due to our over-regulated state; but the egg producers that remain here are efficient and productive, and we are getting the best products in America. Just in time for Easter, I might add!

FROM EGG TO CHICKEN. You’ve heard all the jokes about why the chicken crossed the road, but I’ve found some new answers from people you know:

Dr. Phil: the problem we have here is that this chicken won’t realize that he must first deal with the problem on “THIS” side of the road before it goes after the problem on the “OTHER SIDE” of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he’s acting by not taking on his “CURRENT” problems before adding “NEW” problems.

Oprah: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is part of life, I’m going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

HATS OFF TO OUR FFA MEMBERS AND EDUCATORS. By now, you’ve had the opportunity to read last week’s special salute to our Future Farmers of America programs in Newman and Gustine. While FFA has changed over the years from strictly agriculture enterprises to speaking, social interaction and other leadership and farm-related activities, it has continued to grow here under the direction of some fabulous educators and administrators. Just take a look at the list of members in our communities. The numbers surpass any list I’ve seen for organizations around here. And while agriculture continues to integrate and get bigger, it still attracts thousands of students to college campuses around California and the nation. Many of these students come from here, and many of them are very successful. I urge all of you to support our FFA programs, because these men and women will someday be our leaders, whether they seek employment in agriculture, a related field or something else.

I am encouraged by the strength of our programs here, and I’m excited that there are so many students learning about the importance of agriculture in their lives. As our communities grow and we welcome many new people from more urban areas, it is important that we continue to educate them about agriculture, its place in our valley and our big, fascinating nation and world.

Ag Day is coming up in March. You will hear more about it!
