To the editor:
Many people are writing letters to the editor stating their support of the West Park project because it will bring economic development and job growth.
These letters are from residents in various communities in Stanislaus County, not just on the West Side.
Many of these letters insinuate that people in Patterson do not support economic development or job growth. But that is truly not the case.
To set the record straight, the West Side indeed supports economic development and job growth.
We support economic development and job growth on the Crows Landing air base. We believe that the 1,500 acres of the Crows Landing base, which is the property that the county requested proposals for in the first place, is sufficient to achieve the economic development and job growth for the community.
Just recently, the citizens of Stanislaus County passed Measure E, which directs growth out of the county area and into our cities, which are better equipped to provide municipal services.
We support Measure E, and believe that both residential and industrial development should be directed to cities and not the county.
In light of Measure E, we struggle with the idea that our county representatives will ignore the voice and vote of the people by supporting and allowing the growth of an additional 3,300 acres in the county.
What we support is political responsibility of those in office who will listen to the voice of their constituents and act accordingly instead of pursuing their own agenda.
What we support is the county sticking with its initial plan to develop the 1,500-acre Crows Landing air base for the purposes of economic development and job creation.
