POLITICS ALL OVER THE PLACE. You’ve read it here before....there are lots of politics going on around us, and thanks to the early primary election and the very close Democratic race for president between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the pundits are everywhere. In fact, you can’t open a daily newspaper or turn on your television set without hearing about the barbs flying from both campaigns. And if you are a late-night television viewer, you may also laugh yourself to sleep at the hilarity on Jay Leno, David Letterman and Saturday Night live. They roast Clinton and Obama just about every night. This early-to-bed writer only gets to see the re-runs on the news programs that also can’t help but flog the candidates.
Since Republican Presidential candidate John McCain is the anointed nominee for president already, he is getting little negative attention right now, so he continues to rise in the polls against either Clinton or Obama. While I lean to McCain, contrary to the apparent belief of some woman who sent me an “anti-Republican” t-shirt last week, the press will most certainly go after him once the Democrat is chosen to oppose him.
What the Dems are hoping is that Clinton and Obama don’t beat each other up so much that McCain sails right by either of them. I don’t think that is likely to happen, because there will be lots of attention on the presidential race this year. This will bring lots of people to the polls in November.
MEANWHILE, WE STILL VOTE IN JUNE. On Tuesday Governor Schwarzenegger issued a proclamation setting the recall election date for Republican Senator Jeff Denham for June 3, combining it with the regular June primary election. We should all be prepared to get out and vote for our Senator who has worked so hard on so many issues for us, from Gustine High School’s mascot to agricultural issues as former chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. This man is a fiscal hawk, and he tries hard to keep state expenses in check. He deserves our support in June. His opponents are playing politics right now, even though Denham’s decision to fight to balance our state budget last year was the right one.
STANISLAUS COUNTY SUPERVISOR JIM DEMARTINI WILL FACE CHALLENGER NEWMAN MAYOR JOHN FANTAZIA IN THE DISTRICT 5 Supervisor’s race. I hope to interview each of them on Westside Stories this month, and the show will run for a month on Cable Channel 7 and 26. Fantazia will have an uphill battle against DeMartini, who has made a name for himself on the West Side. The television interview will feature each candidate for 15 minutes. While I like the jobs each of these men are doing as mayor and supervisor and may have my opinions about this race, the interviews will offer each the chance to tell us why they are running and what they want to do for us; no editorial opinion will be included! This newspaper will also provide lots of information about this race and others as we get closer to the June election.
