MORE NUTTY NEWS. Almonds, walnuts, pecans and other nuts are better than ever for us, according to the University of California’s “Wellness Letter.” I’ve reported in previous columns the health benefits of nuts, particularly almonds and walnuts. These two nuts still lead the way in beneficial properties that assist us in achieving better health. Our hearts seem to benefit most from these nuts, but so do our nervous systems, which appear to remain calmer when nuts are introduced into the diet.
A few nuts each morning are easy to include in a daily diet, and there isn’t much reason not to add them to your morning routine. In addition, nuts fill us up when we eat them as they expand into our stomachs; so that mid morning craving is often eliminated. And the “Letter” also says that eating nuts as snacks throughout the day actually helps both keep the weight off and may even assist in shedding some extra pounds.
Walnuts and almonds are plentiful right now, and I urge you to add these beneficial foods to your diet….right now!
BIKER SPOTTED. I sometimes witness some crazy activities on my walks around Newman every morning, from loose dogs to loose lips coming out of some home windows. This week I spotted “Pinky” Forbus riding his bicycle to the coffee shop at about 6:15, his way of improving his health and his mind. When I complimented him on owning a great looking bicycle, he gave me another reason to like the bike. “When you ride a long ways and need a little help, you just turn the right handle,” he said. And when he did an electric motor kicked in and the bicycle sizzled up T Street. I had contemplated buying a bicycle in the coming weeks, and now I like this electric motor concept more and more!!!
WEST PARK HAS LONG JOURNEY YET. While the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors recently gave the go-ahead for West Park to proceed with environmental impact reports and further planning for the huge West Side industrial development project, there are many hurdles yet to jump and hills to climb. First, West Side residents still don’t want the project here, and that means something, whether you believe it now or not. Secondly, making this gigantic project work will take some environmental maneuvering and massaging. And third, there must be something more for the West Side before the final vote is taken to make this a reality. I’ve told both the West Park owners as well as our Supervisor Jim DeMartini, if the county wants to move the project forward, despite all the objections from elected leaders from Newman to Patterson, then our cities and school districts deserve some compensation over and above what West Park is now offering Crows Landing.
Newman and Patterson deserve some money if this project moves ahead in the final stages. I’m talking millions each year in our city and school coffers. The county’s own economic development gurus and the supervisors are touting this development for the millions it will bring to our economy and our county. So give the West Side some of that money in outright grants to our cities and school districts.
