Man found injured along Highway 33

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding an injured bicyclist found along Highway 33 near Hulen Road early Saturday morning, Dec. 15.

Officer Shannon Stiers, public information officer for the Los Banos CHP, said the injured party is a 47-year-old Michigan man who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. Stiers added that the investigation is continuing as authorities attempt to determine what occurred.

Officers responding to the 4 a.m. report of an individual down along the roadside arrived to find  the injured man and a minimally-damaged bicycle but no vehicles or witnesses at the scene, Stiers reported.

Stiers said the injured party was transported by ground ambulance to a Modesto hospital with injuries he described as moderate.

Newman fire report

Personnel from the Newman Volunteer Fire Department and the West Stanislaus Fire Protection District responded to 19 calls for service from Dec. 10-16.

Calls included 12 medical aid responses, two public assists, four motor vehicle accidents and one vehicle fire, reported Fire Chief Keith Bowen.

The motor vehicle accidents included a Dec. 13 vehicle rollover at Jorgensen and Stuhr Roads, resulting in two occupants being transported for treatment, one by air ambulance, and a Dec. 14 accident and big rig fire on Interstate 5 which resulted in an extended road closure and sent one person to the hospital with injuries described by Bowen as minor.

Newman resident Marge Carvalho, an observer for the National Weather Service, reported the following high/low temperatures for the past week. Recordings for the previous 24-hour period are taken at 5 p.m. each day.
