New non-emergency number for Newman

The Newman Police Department will have a new non-emergency phone number beginning July 1.

The new non-emergency number is 209-243-2399.

As always, dial 911 in the event of an emergency.

Newman Fire Report

Personnel from the Newman Fire Department and West Stanislaus Fire Protection District responded to 25 calls for service from June 17-23, according to Fire Chief Keith Bowen.

Bowen said calls for service included one working structure fire, five motor vehicle accidents, seven vegetation fires, 11 medical aid calls and one public assist.

Among the incidents were:

A vegetation fire spreading to a fence June 17 in the 1500 block of Sunny Creek Way. Bowen said the cause was believed to be from illegal use of fireworks and other incendiary devices. Damage was estimated at $1,000.

A June 18 vegetation fire involving a large pile of almond hulls in the 3500 block of Shiells Road. The cause was determined to be spontaneous heating. The loss was estimated at $50,000.

A June 21 rollover accident on Interstate 5 south of Stuhr Road which resulted in one minor injury.

A June 22 incident involving a car going into the CCID canal at Draper and Orestimba. Bowen said no injuries were reported.

A June 22 collision in the 27000 block of River Road involving a single vehicle into an almond orchard. Bowen said no injuries were reported.

West Side weather

Newman resident Marge Carvalho, an observer for the National Weather Service, reported the following high/low temperatures for the past week. Readings for the previous 24-hour period are recorded at 5 p.m. daily.
