Newman appointments

The Newman City Council reappointed two members of its Planning Commission and two Architectural Review Committee members at its Feb. 26 meeting.

Planning Commission members Deborah Allan and Kari Thompson were reappointed to the commission.

Thompson and Sheldon Crow were reappointed to the Architectural Review Committee.

The city still has a number of remaining vacancies. City staff said one seat is vacant on the Planning Commission, three Recreation Commission seats are open and the Architectural Review Committee has one vacant seat with a second anticipated.

Community members interested in appointment to a vacancy may obtain an application at Newman City Hall, 938 Fresno St. (second floor).

Newman Fire

Personnel from the Newman Fire Department and West Stanislaus Fire Protection District responded to 22 calls for service from March 11-17.

Fire Chief Keith Bowen said the calls included 15 medical aid responses, two reported vegetation fires, two motor vehicle collisions (both non-injury), two public assists and one fire alarm.

School event approved

The Newman City Council recently approved use of the downtown Newman plaza for an Aug. 3 back-to-school event hosted by the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District.

The well-attended annual event provides information on local resources and services as well as helping families prepare for the start of a new school year.

Milestone for auto club

The Westside Auto Club will be hosting its 40th annual Linguica Run Sunday, July 7, in Gustine’s Henry Miller Park.

The Gustine City Council recently approved use of the entire park (other than the swimming pool) for the event, as well as closure of Second Avenue between West and Sixth Street, for the event.
