Interstate 5 fatality

The California Highway Patrol said a 66-year-old Sylmar man was killed Thursday morning, April 11, in a single vehicle accident on Interstate 5 just south of Highway 140 (Sullivan Road).

According to the CHP, the male was northbound on Interstate 5, driving a 2006 Ford pickup, when the vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons. The pickup entered the center median, then traveled back across both northbound lanes of the interstate before again leaving the roadway, going down the embankment of the eastern shoulder and overturning into an open field before coming to rest on the driver’s side.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatal accident occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m.

GUSD, classified group reach accord

The Gustine Unified School District Board of Trustees last week ratified a new contract with the district’s classified employees for the 2018-19 year.

The classified employees will receive a 3.5 percent increase to the salary scale, retroactive to July 1, 2018, as well as a 1 percent, one-time lump sum payment which is not reflected on the salary schedule. Employees also will see the annual benefit cap increase by $100 to $13,300.

The board also approved a 3.5 percent increase for the district’s management and confidential employees - with the exception of Dr. Bryan Ballenger, superintendent.

Ballenger explained that his contract does not include a salary schedule or “me too” clause reflecting increases identical to those received by employee groups.

“The only raises are those approved by the board,” Ballenger said of his contract.
