Major injury in crash

A two-vehicle accident Tuesday morning, March 26, near Newman resulted in major injury to one driver, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP said a 25-year-old Atwater man was driving a 2016 Dodge Challenger eastbound on Stuhr Road between Eastin and Jorgensen shortly after 4 a.m. when for unknown reasons he swerved into the westbound lane and collided with an oncoming Freightliner driven by a 32-year-old Newman man.

Authorities said the driver of the Challenger was transported to a Modesto hospital with major injuries.

The big rig driver suffered minor injuries and was not transported, according to the CHP.

Newman fire report

Personnel from the Newman Fire Department and West Stanislaus Fire Protection District Newman station responded to 10 calls for service from March 18-24.

Fire Chief Keith Bowen said calls for service included eight medical aid calls, one public assist, and one vehicle fire.

Local firefighters provided mutual aid to a March 23 vehicle fire on Interstate 5 south of Fink Road. On arrival, local crews assisted with extinguishing a fully-involved vehicle fire. That incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m.
