Multiple fire agencies were dispatched to a home in Gustine after a detached garage was set ablaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Gustine Fire Department was the first agency dispatched to the alley between Sixth Street and West Avenue shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday.

The first firefighters to arrive found the garage fully engulfed in flames. Additional fire services from Merced County, Newman, Stevinson, Hilmar and Santa Nella were called in to assist with containment and to keep the flames from spreading to the home or any neighboring houses.

During the fire a canister of oxygen exploded, said Gustine Fire Chief Pat Borrelli.

“It opened like a can of worms,” Borrelli said.

The fire did destroy the garage, along with a fence and a neighbor’s truck, but no homes were damaged. The estimated loss from the damage was $50,000, according to the fire department.

No injuries were reported.
