GUSTINE - A 31-year-old male was wounded in a Sunday morning shooting, Gustine police said.

The victim was listed in serious condition Sunday at an area hospital, police said.

Police Chief Milt Medeiros said an officer was dispatched to the 300 block of Fifth Street shortly after 2 a.m. on the report of a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

The officer arrived to find the victim bleeding profusely and administered medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived on scene.

During the initial investigation, multiple witnesses said that they had heard gunshots originating from east of Highway 33. Medeiros said investigators determined that the shooting had occurred on Third Avenue between Highway 33 and Second Street.

The victim made his way on foot to the downtown area, Medeiros told Mattos Newspapers.

Multiple shots were fired, according to Medeiros. He was uncertain if the victim had been hit more than once.

“The motive is still unknown,” Medeiros commented. “There is nothing that we have been able to determine. He was not able to provide us with any information at the time, and no independent witnesses have come forward.”

Police said the investigation is active and ongoing. Anybody with information regarding the case is asked to contact Gustine police, 854-3737.
