Motorcycle rider killed in crash
A motorcycle rider was killed in an early-morning accident Monday, June 8, near Hatfield State Recreation Area, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The CHP said the deceased was a 22-year-old Oxnard male.
According to the CHP, the motorcycle rider was northbound on Kelley Road approaching River Road when he allowed the 2019 Kawasaki Ninja to move to the right and travel off the roadway.
The motorcycle laid over, throwing the rider off. Both the rider and the motorcycle slid into and through the intersection with River Road before coming to rest on a dirt shoulder north of River Road, the CHP said.
The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the accident was reported at 4:47 a.m.
Personnel from the Newman Fire Department and West Stanislaus Fire Protection District’s Newman station responded to 25 calls for service from May 29-June 4.
Fire Chief Keith Bowen said calls for service included 15 medical aid responses, three public assists, one alarm, one smoke check, three motor vehicle collisions and two vegetation fires.
Bowen said the motor vehicle accidents a May 30 collision involving a motorcycle at Shiells and Draper. Bowen said the rider was transported by helicopter to a local trauma center with injuries that appeared to be moderate.
On June 3, emergency crews responded to the area of Bell and Stuhr Roads for a report of a vehicle which struck a cow. Bowen said injuries to the driver were minor.
