Food trucks for Gustine events

The Gustine City Council last week gave permission for mobile food vendors to be in attendance at two upcoming special events.

Two food trucks will be allowed to be in attendance at a Sept. 27 movie night in Henry Miller Park.

An unspecified number of food trucks will be allowed at the airport fly-in planned for Oct. 5.

The city typically does not allow food trucks other than in industrial areas, but can waive that restriction for special events.

Food trucks were allowed at the community’s Fourth of July celebration and were well-received.

“My concern is that if we start to get these food trucks in all the time, do you think people are going to keep being attracted to them,” asked council member Derek Alexander.

Mayor Pat Nagy’s concern was to ensure that food trucks don’t supplant local organizations who want to fund-raise at special events.

“On the one hand I would rather give first option to local clubs and organizations, but the Lions are the ones who have been doing (fly-in concessions) and they don’t seem to have a problem with (allowing food trucks),” Nagy commented.

“They were doing it to help us out,” said Jami Westervelt, the city’s community/economic development director.

Resolutions authorizing the food trucks at the upcoming events were unanimously approved by the council.
