Gustine council pay hike finalized

Gustine City Council members will be getting a pay hike a year from now.

Council members voted at their Dec. 17 meeting to finalize an increase in their monthly compensation from the current $85 to $300.

Unlike some cities, the mayor receives no added compensation.

According to city staff reports, the $300 salary is the highest allowed by Government Code for a city of Gustine’s size.

Council compensation has not been adjusted in more than a decade, members noted in presenting the matter, and the $85 was not enough to cover out-of-pocket expenses incurred in serving the city.

They will have to wait for the higher pay, however. Regulations stipulate that the pay increase will not take effect until winners of the next council election are seated.

The higher compensation will take effect for all council members in January 2021, City Manager Doug Dunford said.
