Hearing postponed in Cpl. Singh murder case
A preliminary hearing in the murder case against the man accused of killing Newman Police Cpl. Ronil Singh was postponed last Monday, Nov. 25, by Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Ricardo Cordova at the request of the defense attorney, the Modesto Bee reported.
According to the Stanislaus County Superior Court website, the four-day preliminary hearing originally scheduled to begin Dec. 10 is now set for March.
Defense attorney Stephen Foley requested the postponement to have sufficient time to comb through volumes of discovery evidence which he said was only recently received from federal authorities, according to the Bee.
Foley, during a Nov. 18 court appearance, had indicated that he would not be able to adequately review the discovery information prior to the initial Dec. 10 hearing date.
The preliminary hearing will determine if there is sufficient evidence for accused killer Paulo Virgen Mendoza to stand trial in the case.
Mendoza is accused of shooting and killing Singh during a traffic stop in the early morning hours of Dec. 26, 2018.
He was arrested two days later in the Bakersfield area after an extensive 55-hour manhunt.
Foley has entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Mendoza.
