Newman launches ‘wellness check’ program

The city of Newman, in partnership with law firm Churchwell White LLP, has developed a community wellness check phone line for local residents who do not have somebody who can routinely check on them during these difficult times.

The phone line prompts residents to submit their contact information if they are interested in receiving regular wellness checks during the COVID-19 crisis. Wellness calls can be made in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Residents who wish to receive a wellness check may call 1-800-582-5586.

CHP asks public’s assistance in hit-and-run bicycle fatality

A 51-year-old bicyclist riding on Marshall Road south of Patterson was killed Wednesday evening, April 1, when he was struck by a vehicle whose driver continued on from the scene, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The traffic collision was reported shortly before 7 p.m.

The deceased was identified as Frankie Sanchez of Patterson. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities reported.

According to the CHP, the cyclist was riding westbound on Marshall Road, along the north roadway edge, approaching Tulip Avenue when he was struck from behind by a westbound vehicle believed to be a 2000-2006 model year General Motors truck or SUV.

Investigators found a passenger side mirror and glass housing at the scene. Authorities said the vehicle involved may have sustained front and right side collision damage, and is likely to still have its passenger side mirror assembly, minus the actual mirror.

Vehicles which match the category are Chevrolet Silverado or Avalanche, Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban, GMC Yukon and GMC Sierra, authorities said.

The CHP is asking anyone with information in the case to contact authorities at 545-7440 or 356-2900.
