NEWMAN - The 2019 edition of the Newman Fall Festival will pay tribute to local law enforcement.

The Newman Police Department will be honored as the grand marshal, said Julie Barcelos, general chairman of of the Fall Festival Committee, and a “thin blue line” theme will be incorporated through many of the activities.

Barcelos said that tribute will also be paid to Newman Police Department Cpl. Ronil Singh, who was shot and killed during a Dec. 26 traffic stop.

“We want to honor all the current officers, but we also want to honor his memory,” Barcelos commented. “We don’t want people to forget that tragedy, but we also want them to continue to be supportive of the officers who are here every day keeping our community safe.”

The police department has long been instrumental in the success of the Fall Festival, she added.

“They do a lot for us, and keep the atmosphere what we want it to be, which is family-friendly and safe,” Barcelos told Mattos Newspapers.

Committee members are raising funds for the establishment of a permanent law enforcement tribute in Pioneer Park, she added.

The theme will be woven into numerous Fall Festival activities.

Barcellos said tickets for the Evening Under the Stars wine and cheese event, Miss Newman Pageant and Little Mr. and Miss Newman Contest all feature a thin blue line theme.

“We will be replacing all the blue ribbons down Main Street, and the blue lights will stay in the bollards,” she said. “We hopefully will be doing trees within the park with lights as well, and we ant to see the streets lined with thin blue line flags for the parade.

“We hope that it also gets more people to want to come and be in the parade, whether that is law enforcement or people who just want to show their respect and support,” Barcelos noted.

A number of items donated for auction at the Evening Under the Stars reflect a theme supportive of law enforcement, she added.

“We got approval to sell extra tickets for that event, so we can accommodate up to 450 people that evening,” Barcelos said of the Evening Under the Stars. “We think that people will really want to come out and support the police department.”

The 2019 Little Mr. and Miss Newman Contest and Miss Newman Pageant will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, at the West Side Theatre to begin the festive Labor Day weekend. The Evening Under the Stars follows on Friday, Aug. 30, in the downtown plaza, leading into a full weekend of events.

The weekend will feature a number of traditional events, entertainment and much more. The 2019 Fall Festival schedule includes the return of several popular events, including a salsa/guacamole contest, photo contest and lip-sync battle.

In addition, Barcelos said, a cornhole tournament which made its debut last year will return to the schedule and an expanded kids’ zone is planned.

Tickets are currently available at Mattos Newspapers for the Evening Under the Stars, Miss Newman Pageant and Little Mr. and Miss Newman Contest.

Booth applications are also available at Mattos Newspapers. The deadline for booth registration is Aug. 2, Barcelos noted.
